WHO IS REQUIRED TO TAKE THE TESTS?

Professional Knowledge Tests

A professional knowledge test is required of all applicants for a teaching certificate. There are three levels of the Professional Knowledge test: Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary.

Subject Knowledge Tests

Candidates must take a test in the specific area in which they are seeking certification if a test is offered in that area. Information about test and/or credit hour requirements for approved areas in which AEPA assessments are not offered can be found on the ADE Certification Unit's Web site at www.azed.gov/certification.

Constitutions of the United States and Arizona Test

Candidates applying for certification to become a teacher or school administrator are required to pass an examination on the provisions and principles of the Constitutions of the United States and Arizona. Candidates who have successfully completed ADE-approved course work in this area are exempt from this requirement.

Administrator Tests

Candidates who wish to become certified school administrators must take the appropriate test as a condition of receiving certification as a superintendent, principal, or supervisor.

Basic Skills Test

Passing the Basic Skills test is not a requirement for an Arizona teaching certificate. Arizona educator preparation programs may require students to take and pass this test.

Tests for Additional Approved Areas

A person who holds an Arizona elementary or secondary certificate and applies for an additional approved area must take the relevant subject knowledge test, if one is offered.

Tests for Substitutes

Individuals seeking a substitute certificate are exempt from all examinations.
