Important Information for Candidates

Candidates Seeking Certification in Social Studies

The AEPA Social Studies test (field 03) may be taken to satisfy assessment requirements for teachers seeking certification for grades 7 through 12. The AEPA Social Studies test (field 03) cannot be used to satisfy NCLB "highly qualified" requirements for grades 9 through 12. Instead, candidates at grades 9 through 12 will need to pass one of the following tests:

  • Economics (field 35)
  • Geography (field 04)
  • History (field 05)
  • Political Science/American Government (field 06)
Candidates Seeking Certification for Middle Grades Instruction

The AEPA Middle Grades Mathematics test (field 37) became available in April 2006. The AEPA Middle Grades Language Arts/Reading (field 38), Middle Grades General Science (field 39), and Middle Grades Social Studies (field 40) tests became available in April 2007. Please note the following important information concerning these tests and certification:

  • Elementary Certificate: The Elementary Certificate requires a passing score on the Professional Knowledge—Elementary test (field 91) and the Elementary Education subject knowledge test (field 01). Once the Elementary Certificate is issued, a middle grades subject approved area may be added by passing the appropriate AEPA middle grades subject knowledge test.

  • Secondary Certificate: The Secondary Certificate requires an approved area for grades 7–12. Therefore, a middle grades subject knowledge test may not be used as the first subject knowledge test required for a Secondary Certificate. To qualify for a Secondary Certificate, one must pass the Professional Knowledge—Secondary test (field 92) and pass a subject knowledge test that covers grades 7–12 or, if a test is not offered, one must show 24 semester hours of college coursework in the content area on official transcripts from an accredited institution. Once the Secondary Certificate is issued, with at least one approved area that covers grades 7–12, a middle grades approved area may be added by passing the appropriate AEPA middle grades subject knowledge test.
